Legal Services in support of Human Rights

Human Rights Services focused largely on access to the legal system and legal services.

The objectives of this result area to:

  • Improve access to justice for vulnerable groups;
  • Promote the transformation of the legal sector including the judiciary, magistracy, legal profession and the paralegal
    sector;
  • Utilise litigation to realise rights;
  • Challenge impunity in the region;
  • Achieve justice for the victims of political violence.

Advice Offices
The Foundation’s ‘flagship’ programme is support to advice offices which facilitates access to justice to vulnerable groups living in poor rural and destitute communities. The Foundation has funded more than 123 advice offices.

The Foundation has also assisted in the development of the paralegal sector and their efforts at recognition by the formal
legal sector. The Foundation supports initiatives that build capacity of paralegals, specifically focussing on national qualifications and formal recognition. Significant progress has been made in lobbying for a national curriculum and creating awareness on the Legal Practice Bill and its implications for the formal recognition of all paralegals.
